Commander-Prince Tobias Santorelli is the leader of the Animorphs as a whole, and of the Alphamorphs specifically. His Howler morph makes him probably the greatest warrior amongst the Animorphs. The collective memory of that morph, along with his own experiences, also makes him a superior tactician. His abilities and reputation have earned him the title of Devil Prince. He is better known by his given name, Tobias.

Tobias's appearance is often described as that of a serial killer. His face shows no emotion, and his eyes are just as cold. He is tall and thin and usually dresses in dark colors.

Canon History

Contains Spoilers
Tobias is the son of the Andalite Prince Elfangor and a human woman named Loren, although he did not learn the truth about his parents until The Pretender, the 23rd book in the series.
He was (presumed to be) orphaned at a young age and was raised by an apathetic aunt and uncle, who detested each other and used guardianship of the boy to punish the other. One lived in the Animorphs' home town; the other lived on the other side of the country. In school, he was constantly picked on and abused by other children. He had neither few friends. His only friend, Jake was more of an acquaintance. Until the day Tobias, Jake, Marco, Rachel, and Cassie wandered through an abandoned construction site on their way home from the mall.

There, they met Prince Elfangor. In the battle above Earth, his Moonraker had been shot down. He crash-landed in the construction site. He told the children all about the war between the Andalites and the Yeerks, and how it had come to Earth. Tobias became one of the five original Animorphs.

During the war, Tobias experienced intense changes. Very early on (in Animorphs book #1: The Invasion), he was trapped in the morph of a red-tailed hawk. He regained his ability to morph when he led a pair of Hork-bajir to freedom in book 13: The Change. Tobias also entered into a romantic relationship with Rachel.

After the war, more specifically, after Rachel's death, Tobias withdrew from civilized society. He joined Jake on the mission to rescue Ax from the Yeerks because of the old friendship he and Ax shared.

Neomorphs History

In Book 55: The Prologue, just before Jake rammed the Blade Ship with the Rachel, the Drode stopped time and visited Tobias. He convinced Tobias to join Crayak in his war against The One. Tobias returned to Earth in an attempt to stop the Yeerk invasion before it started, but failed.

In Book 57: The Weapon, it was revealed that Santorelli was Tobias's step-father though an unusual twist of time.

In Book 58: The Retirement, Tobias became the leader of the Animorphs shortly before Jake's death. His leadership was made official in Book 59: The Revival when the Animorphs unanimously elected him as the leader. Tobias's leadership remained uncontested even once Jake returned from the dead. Now, Tobias leads the Animorphs as a whole, and the Alphamorphs personally.

There is a growing concern amongst the Animorphs that Tobias might be losing his mind. His behavior is erratic at times, and he reveals some unusual thoughts (such as nicknaming Marco and David Nuts and Bolts in his head). He studies military texts obsessively. He has grown exceedingly cold and ruthless and has said on several occasions that he is willing to lose his soul for this war.

Personal Life

When Rachel was resurrected in The Revival, she and Tobias resumed their relationship from before she was killed. In Book 64: The Liberation, Rachel learned that she was pregnant with Tobias's child. Tobias is very close with his half-brother, Al. And, in book 70: The memories, Tobias and Rachel became engaged. However, his probable mother-in-law, Naomi, hates him; apparently more than his mortal enemies. The feeling is mutual. Tobias and Rachel were married in 74: The Union. He and Rachel have an infant son, named Gideon.

Tobias also enjoys a successful military career. He was made a Prince in book 58. He was later promoted to the rank of War-Prince for his efforts in A New Foe. He was granted the rank of Commander in the same book, making his official rank Commander-Prince. Few know the true secret to Tobias's military success. Although alone he is a skilled leader and tactician, he has studied the teachings of various military leaders endlessly, most frequently citing Sun Tzu. However, in addition to his own studies, he has an advantage that no others in the galaxy are known to possess: extra memories.

Memories

Tobias is fond of his Howler morph and uses it on many occasions throughout the series. Howlers are known to possess a collective memory. In essence, any successful battle tactic is passed down through this memory into every generation of Howlers. Because this memory is genetic, Tobias inherited it along with his morph. He has since spent uncounted hours delving into this memory, thus giving him generations of experience that other generals simply do not have. Furthermore, he also possess some of the memories of his father, Prince Elfangor.

Notable Changes

Tobias has changed greatly from the shy boy at the beginning of the canon series. He is much colder and more calculated. His mind is still that of a hawk, even though his body is human now. He is more distant now, and possibly insane.

Trivia

Tobias's full name was given as "Commander-Prince Tobias-Sirinial-Santorelli" during a statement made by Rachel during their wedding. It is unclear if Tobias always used Sirinial as a second name or if he took it after learning of his father's true identity.
